The CAL-8 models were never fully realized before the fall of humanity. It was up to the remaining synthetics to finish the quest of its former creators and forge a device that could operate as a sheer brute in times of battle.  Although it is missing various key intellectual components of the initial blueprint, its ability to consume and destroy were successfully implemented into its core mechanism.  The lack of tactical assets is the main vulnerability of CAL-8, but no one can seem to surpass its brutal strength.
